Mabon: The Autumnal Equinox

Subscribe for more Xristi Witch YouTube content!

Mabon happens on (or around) the autumnal equinox, usually around September 22nd. It is the second of three harvest festivals: Lughnasadh, harvesting wheats and grains being the first in August. Mabon occurs in September, harvesting gourds, pumpkins and apples. The third and most widely known harvest sabbat is Samhain, which is more commonly known and celebrated as Halloween. Samhain is the harvest of remaining apples, root vegetables, nuts and berries in October. This middle harvest, Mabon, is often referred to as the "witches thanksgiving" since it celebrates the abundance of the past year with a feast. It is a good time to set intentions for things you want less of in your life, to let go of as the life dies off and the winter months approach.

How to celebrate Mabon:

  • Decorate your home and/or altar with autumnal elements that celebrate the season and the harvest. Seasonal flowers, gourds, acorns, pine cones.

  • Harvest your garden or stock up on herbs, salts or other ingredients that you want to have on hand to use.

  • Host a feast or potluck! Share the abundance of the season with family and/or friends with seasonal foods and drinks.

  • Divination. As the veil thins as we get closer to Samhain, our divination practices may become more accurate. If you haven’t been already, hop back into your favorite divination practice.

Apple season Magick

Apples have long been used in a variety of magickal workings. From love, to healing, manifesting abundance, and connection to the underworld or the spirit realm.

  • if you live in an area with apple farms or are lucky enough to have an apple tree, you can grab some of your own harvest.

  • Do an old fashioned apple peel divination or another form or apple love spell

  • Inside the apple is a star, a pentacle. You can slice your apple horizontal to the apples core and dry in an oven and decorate your Altar with for protection

  • Collect the seeds for Spell jars, charm bags or other magickal workings

  • Make a drinkable potion for love or abundance with apple juice or apple cider
