Growing & Harvesting Rosemary
Many have had success growing their own rosemary in their yard and even indoors! Rosemary needs full sun and good drainage. It prefers to keep its' roots dry and absorb moisture from the air. Keep your rosemary happy by not overwatering! If you're growing indoors, keep a water saucer under it so it can absorb the evaporating moisture!
If you know someone with a rosemary plant, you can grow your own off of a 2 - 3 inch cutting from the soft part of the wood on their plant (easiest to find in the Spring). Remove the leaves from the bottom of the cutting. Plant it in a small vessel with good drainage. Keep it in a greenhouse (or cover with a plastic bag to create your own) to keep moisture in the air until it starts showing new growth. Then you can move it to the pot or garden space where you'd like to keep it!
A Few Ways to use Rosemary Magick
Rosemary Hair Potion:
Rosemary can help improve circulation, promoting a healthier scalp, and new hair growth. AND it can add a nice shine and health to your locks! Steep some rosemary in hot water. Stir it clockwise while picturing your luscious, shiny dream hair. Let the water cool and absorb the rosemary's properties for 1-2 hours and strain out the rosemary. After your normal hair washing routine, pour the rinse over your hair so your hair absorbs the magick too!
Memory Wreaths:
Rosemary is a great aid for memory! The ancient greek scholars wore rosemary in their hair to help remember their studies. In the Middle Ages, the bride and groom at a wedding would wear or carry rosemary to help the couple remember the wedding. You can make a rosemary wreath or just bundled rosemary sprigs to hang wherever you are studying.
Memory Sachets
Making a magickal sachet with rosemary to put in your pillowcase or under your pillow can help you remember your dreams and dispel nightmares. You can use a cleansed pre-made bag, like a drawstring bag, or sew your own. Add rosemary and any other herbs you select (for pleasant dreams and sleep, lavender is a nice addition!).
Rosemary Kitchen Witchery:
Get all the magickal properties of rosemary by cooking with it! It's delicious in breads, soups, pastas, potatoes, and many other dishes. Some even make rosemary tea, which can aid in digestion as well as be a direct way to absorb some of it's magickal energies.
Energy Cleansing
You can use dried bundles of rosemary for smoke cleansing and protecting your home. Alternatively you can use rosemary leaves as a loose incense, rosemary essential oils in an oil diffuser, or buy or make your own rosemary cleansing/protection room sprays.
***A warning about essential oils: I accidentally drank a rosemary essential oil once (thinking it was just apple cider vinegar - it's a long story). It was a whole fiasco where I called Poison Control. I felt terrible and tasted nothing but rosemary oil for the next several days. Poison Control told me sometimes essential oils can be mixed/diluted with other essential oils that ARE toxicif consumed (such as eucalyptus). Some essential oils are safe when diluted. But please only consider ingesting essential oils under the close direction from a trained/experienced herbalist!Believe me, it was no joke!
