Candle Magick: How to Use a Spell Candle + Flame Meanings

Once you have prepared a spell candle, you are just about ready to cast your spell! What comes next?

You will need:

  • Your spell candle

  • A candle holder or fire-safe dish, coaster, plate, or other surface

  • A place to perform your spell

  • Any cleansing, circle casting or other altar tools that you prefer to use/work with

  • Matches or a lighter

Set Up Your Space

Wherever you decide to cast your candle spell (whether it is your altar, bedroom, living room, attic floor, sea cave, or whatever it is) you'll need to get it all set up. You might want to have crystals, herbs, incense, and other altar tools present. You also might just want it to be you, your candle and your candle holder.

TIP: If you don't have a candle holder or you have one that's too big for your candle, you can melt a little of the wax on the bottom and stick it to a plate or into a larger candle holder!

Cleanse The Space

Once your space is set up, perform your regular area cleansing routine to make sure there is no stagnant or negative energy lingering around.

Optional: Cast Your Circle

I note this as optional because not everyone chooses to cast circles. Many think it is absolutely necessary for every spell, but there are others who also don't ever cast circles and get by just fine. It's up to the individual! I like to cast circles for protection and to start connecting to the earth and entering a meditative state, but I don't always go through the whole routine. You do you.

Light & Meditate

Light your candle and meditate on the intention that you are setting with it. Be specific, but not too specific. If you have no belief or visualization of the spell manifesting, it probably won't. If you only have one super specific desired outcome, the universe may have other plans in store for you and you may not actually see the spell happen how you expected. Consider different ways that it could positively manifest, and be open other ways it might as well.

Read the Flame

After you have sat with your candle and solidified your intention, you can try to read the candle flame to see how your spell is going!

Keep in mind your environment. If you chose to cast your candle spell outside, next to open doors or windows, or with fans running, that could cause misleading results. You do not have to read your candle flame in order to cast your spell, but if you have the right environment, it can be a great way to get some insight.

Normal, Steady Flame: Spell is on a normal track.

Tall, Strong Flame: Spell is backed by a lot of energy. May manifest fast!

Short, Steady Flame: Spell has less energy. May take longer to see results.

Small, Weak Flame: Now is not the time OR there will be obstacles to face before results.

Wild, Dancing Flame: High, chaotic energy. Anticipate some unexpected results or obstacles to dance around.

Flickering Flame: Spirits or outside energy are present to help guide the spell.

Crackling/Popping Flame: Something is trying to speak with you. Your spell may need to be modified. Listen and follow your intuition.

Black Smoke: Bad luck/negative energy is in the way

White Smoke: A sign of good luck!

Candle Goes Out/Won't Light/Breaks Container: Now is not the right time or intention for this spell. Stop the spell.

Let It Burn

Burn your candle until it is entirely burnt down. If you cannot do this in a single sitting, revisit this same spell with the same process sit daily or on a different, consistent schedule (ex: every other day or weekly) until it is gone.

Once the candle is gone, your spell is complete! Say thank you, close your circle, and be open to any positive possibilities!
